GREEK LANGUAGE
The Greek language course, based on the “nature”, or “inductive-contextual”, method, is directed towards everyone, from teachers to students to plain enthusiasts, who has a love for the language of Plato.
A course tailored for you
We believe that Greek is a language too, and that in order to learn any language well, one must exercise the four basic linguistic skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing.
We want everybody to take an active part in our lessons; that’s why, each group will be composed of no more than ten participants.
Two different learning levels
When registering, the participants will choose one of these two levels: A1 or B1. The A2 and B2.1 courses will be held from April.
Students must have the following books: Athènaze I (the much augmented Italian edition) and Meletèmata I.
The following chapters of Athènaze I will be covered:
A1: chapters I through V;
B1: chapters XI through XIV.
In our courses these points of grammar will be dealt with:
A1: the alphabet; Greek orthography and pronunciation; the article; the first and second declension; first class adjectives; personal pronouns; possessives; the present indicative active; the imperative active; the infinitive active;
A2: all the declensions; second class adjectives; the present indicative middle; the present participle active and middle; numerals; the interrogative τίς and the indefinite τɩς;
B1: the 1st and the 2nd aorist; the imperfect; the relative pronoun and relative clauses; 3rd declension nouns with stem in -εσ-; comparatives and superlatives of adjectives and adverbs; the demonstratives οὗτος, ὅδε, ἐκεῖνος; expressions of time; interrogative and indefinite adverbs;
B2.1: the 3rd aorist; contracted verbs in -ο-; contracted nouns of the 2nd declension; the verbs δύναμαι, κεῖμαι and ἐπίσταμαι; the irregular nouns ἡ ναῦς and ὁ βοῦς; numerals; the future; the verbs εἶμι, δίδωμι and τίθημι; final clauses with ὡς and the future participle; the meanings of αὐτός; 3rd declension adjectives of the group of ταχύς, ταχεῖα, ταχύ;
B2.2: the genitive absolute; the use of the article, and particularly the attributive and predicative position; the verb ἵστημι; the supplementary participle; the subjunctive mood; the verb ἵημι; clauses of fearing; the eventual subjunctive with ἄν; the verb δείκνυμι; other verbs with the suffix -νῡ-/-νυ-; the indirect speech.
Dates of the courses
Each course is divided into 20 one-hour lessons: two per week.
All lessons will be held on Zoom. They will follow this timetable:
A1: every Monday and Thursday, from the 20th of January to the 27th of March: lessons will begin at 7 p. m., Rome time (UTC + 1).
B1: every Monday and Thursday, from the 20th of January to the 27th of March: lessons will begin at 5:45 p. m., Rome time (UTC + 1).
Should you be unable to attend a lesson, the Schola Latina will be glad to provide you with a video recording.
