In Janaury we’ll continue our series of courses of Latin and Greek. They’ll be followed by other courses courses in April.
For now, you can register for the following courses (which have a limited number of participants):
Latin language: elementary (A1, A2), intermediate (B1, B2, B3) and advanced level (C1.1, C1.2);
Ancient Latin literature: two courses, for students at advanced level (C1 and C2);
Medieval Latin literature: for students at advanced level (C1 and C2);
Latin literature of the Renaissance: for students at advanced level (C1 and C2);
Daily life in urban and rural Rome: for students at advanced level (C1 and C2);
Women in ancient Rome: for students at advanced level (C1 and C2);
Greek language: elementary (A1) and intermediate level (B1).

ANCIENT LATIN LITERATURE
In this course, we’ll read passages on a variety of topics taken from the main writers of the Neronian age: Seneca, Petronius and Lucan. We’ll then conclude with Quintilian and his reflections on eloquence.
A course tailored for you
The course will be entirely in Latin: participants will listen, speak, read and write. An advanced knowledge of the Latin language is required.
We want everybody to take an active part in our lessons; that’s why, each group will be composed of no more than ten participants.

The course will be held from the 14th of January to the 18th of March (ten 75-minute lessons: one per week).
All lessons will be held on Zoom, every Tuesday: they will begin at 7 p. m., Rome time (UTC + 1).

For a general idea of ancient Latin literature, any book currently in print will work. But if you would prefer to stay within the language of Rome, you can consult these books written in Latin, which, however dated, are still for the most part accurate, and are furthemore good examples of quality Latin prose.

MEDIEVAL LATIN LITERATURE
In this course, we’ll focus on the final period of medieval literature, spanning the 13th and early 14th centuries. During this time, academic literature, factual literature, historiography and art prose flourished.

There aren’t many histories of medieval Latin literature, in Latin or in another language, to be found and consulted for free on the Internet.
By way of example we’ll list just a few books, then, that handle the chief medieval authors: some of these have been translated into other languages.

During the lessons, we’ll read and comment on passages, which will be provided by the teacher, from some authors of this period, such as emperor Frederick II, Thomas Aquinas, James of Varazze (the author of the Golden legend), the encyclopaedists Vincent of Beauvais and Bartholomew the Englishman, and Dante Alighieri, who, in addition to the Italian Divine comedy, also wrote several works in Latin.

This course delves into the wit, irony, and satire embedded in the Latin literature of the Renaissance, exploring how humour was used to critique and entertain.

DAILY LIFE IN URBAN AND RURAL ROME
In this course we’ll examine the Roman life both in the bustling cities and the peaceful countryside.

Through the lens of written and archaeological sources, we’ll explore the architecture and function of different housing types − domus, villa and insula − and reconstruct the appearance of Roman streets, complete with their water supply systems, fire control methods, and urban growth and traffic management. We’ll also journey into the countryside, to examine rural life and agricultural practices.

In this course, we’ll discuss the lives of some remarkable women of ancient Rome, whose stories offer insight into the roles women played within a male-dominated society.

We’ll delve into the lives of pivotal figures like Livia Drusilla, wife of emperor Augustus; Cornelia, the esteemed mother of the Gracchi; Sempronia, known for her intelligence and resolve; and others, who left lasting marks on Roman history. Together, we’ll examine historical accounts and evidence to understand how these women expressed agency through family roles, education, child-rearing, and personal aspirations, and the ways they navigated societal expectations to shape their destinies.
